The Social Experience
“My son has been in
social skills classes for years…this program really got to the core
issues and we have finally had a major social breakthrough!” Mother
of Joseph, age 10
This 12 week Theory
of Mind training series has been designed to address the core goals
of teaching social understanding to children who have high
functioning autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, ADHD, anxiety, and related
exceptionalities. Based on a new curriculum model designed by Dr.
Kirstina Ordetx, this program teaches participants how to connect
with their social world by recognizing the power of the Four
Social Senses: seeing, hearing, thinking, and feeling.
These connections allow children to be fully present in social
interactions and more successful in life. The following concepts
will be covered during the sessions:
·
Self
regulation in social settings
·
Becoming a
better “mind-reader”
·
Being
“present” (how the body talks vs. how the body listens)
·
Use of “spy
glasses” to uncover social “clues”
·
How to “talk
without saying a word”
·
Coordinating
triadic joint attention
·
Topic
maintenance
·
Self
assessment strategies
This training series
will incorporate several best-practice approaches based on the
fieldwork of Simon Baron-Cohen, Michelle Garcia-Winner, and Peter
Mundy. The curriculum offers a dynamic opportunity for children to
gain a stronger ability to self reference and share experiences with
others in a reciprocal, meaningful way. Each session provides a
caregiver handout to reinforce the lessons and to provide
recommendations for extension activities to encourage the
generalization of skills outside of the therapy setting.
